My New Year Is You

O You, companion of all my moments,

          You are the tranquility of the entire world.

Light and joy, refuge and sanctuary —

          all are You.

You are my sorrow’s confidant,

          You are strength and power.

You are beyond comparison,

          above anything I can say.

My new year is You, my festival, You,

          the delight of my soul is You.

You are my beloved, my only love;

          You are my very soul.

O my elegant cypress, all my patience

          and peacefulness come from You.

You are my profit and gain,

          what I possess or lack.

I’d give up my soul to You if only

          You would rest Your foot on my head;

It doesn’t matter how much disdain You show

          or that You regard me as worthless.

My new year is You, my festival, You,

          the delight of my soul is You.

You are my beloved, my only love;

          You are my very soul.

You belong to the people of purity.

          No — You are purity itself.

You are bound by fidelity.

          No — You’re the very embodiment of fidelity.

I am a lover of pain;

          You are my pain and affliction,

I am slain by love;

          You are the physician, and my only cure.

My new year is You, my festival, You,

          the delight of my soul is You.

You are my beloved, my only love,

          You are my very soul.

On the path of devotion,

          You are both disciple and master.

In the rulebook of loving kindness

          You are both the ink and what is written.

The moment that You generously

          entered into my heart

You became the hope filling my chest

          and the remembrance always on my mind,

My new year is You, my festival, You,

          the delight of my soul is You.

You are my beloved, my only love,

          You are my very soul.
