The Master’s Grace

My heart is caught in His lasso

          and cannot be still.

If it does not perish in this condition,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

Pain from Him is its own cure.

          The heart will burn as long as

the flames continue; if they do,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

O God, make me more of a lover.

          Don’t let me get sober.

Believe me, if I’m sincere,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I don’t seek drunkenness.

          I have nothing but faqr.

If I lose my existence,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I will cut through wisdom

          and go completely mad.

If I become estranged from the world,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I am a lover afflicted with pain,

          freed from the bodily form.

If, in short, I bear no fruit,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I am a wretched beggar,

          in love with pain and calamity.

If I am afflicted with His love,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

His love is the hope of my life;

          it’s my heart’s comfort and security.

If my heart knows nobody but Him,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

If my heart has abandoned me

          and flown from my rooftop

to settle in His district,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

My heart circles around His district

          and beholds His loving face.

If I desire Him in every moment,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I am both candle and moth,

          treasure and ruin.

If I am a stranger to myself,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I am a beggar for His love;

          day and night I am beside myself.

If I cry out in praise of His beauty,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

The heart’s fire is kindled;

          it’s burning away “I” and “you.”

If any false claims are consumed,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.

I do not desire other than Him.

          If He casts His glance at me for a moment

and I become the bestower of light to the sun and moon,

          it’s because of the master’s grace.
