Ascetics seek virgins in heaven through prayers;

in humble entreaty, we seek Him alone.

Let those who deny us know

we have already rejected ourselves.

I adore this gamble of love,

for the penniless profit from their loss.

Whoever plays His backgammon of love

never rests until he gambles himself away.

So long as the dice are rolled by the Cupbearer,

the lovers will lie stranded in an impasse of bewilderment.
